Best Grinder Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder

Coffee aficionados everywhere argue that the French press brews the best cup of coffee. It’s hard to argue otherwise, especially when you consider that the French press extracts more flavor than any other brewing method.

With a French press, coffee grinds are placed in the pot and hot water is slowly added to the pot. After three to five minutes, the plunger is pushed to the bottom of container, trapping the grinds in the bottom of the pot. If brewed correctly, you get a fresh cup of coffee teeming with intense flavor without any grinds. Although French press coffee tends to be oilier than drip coffee, it has the strongest flavor and an intense aroma.

While the brewing method certainly plays a role in the quality of the coffee, the coffee grinds themselves also play a crucial role. In order to enjoy the a good tasting coffee, you need to start with fresh coffee beans. This is where a grinder comes in. If you’re serious about making the best French press-style coffee, you need to invest in a good grinder.

Why Use A Coffee Grinder with a French Press?

When it comes to brewing a delicious cup of coffee, the freshness of the coffee beans and the size of the grind make all the difference in the world. Coffee that’s brewed in a French press tastes best when the freshest coffee beans are used. This means starting with whole coffee beans and grinding them to perfection.

A coffee grinder allows you to:

  • Customize your grind to your own personal preference. A coffee grinder allows you to decide how coarse or fine you want your grind to be. The finer the grind, the stronger the coffee will be.
  • Use high quality, fresh coffee beans. When you grind your own coffee, you can choose the highest quality, fresh beans.
  • Enjoy top-shelf quality coffee. Freshly ground coffee is the key to a better brew. Coffee beans lose 60% of their aroma just 15 minutes after being ground. Pre-ground coffee cannot compare to the flavor and aroma of freshly ground coffee.

A French press allows for maximum flavor extraction, but without fresh coffee, your brew will be void of flavor. Investing in a good coffee grinder will ensure that you enjoy a great cup of coffee every time.

The Best Coffee Grinder for French Press

We’ve researched and tested many grinders during the last few months, and eventually decided to narrow our list to the top 3. Among other things, we took into account price, consumers’ reviews and, of course, the results of our tests.

1. Breville Smart Grinder Coffee Machine

Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder

The Breville Smart Grinder Coffee Machine is made in the USA and features an impressive 25 grind settings. From coarse to Turkish fine, this coffee grinder can do it all.

What we really loved about this grinder is that it features a special setting specifically for a French press. There are also settings for espresso, drip and percolator coffee machines as well.

This smart grinder is more sophisticated than your average grinder. It boasts a sleek backlit LCD screen that clearly displays the number of cups you’re grinding for, the grind setting and the customized grind amount. Each time you add another dose, the system automatically calibrates. We found the touch controls to be easy to use, and loved the fact that the machine knew exactly how much coffee we needed.

Unlike a blade grinder, the conical burrs featured on the Breville Smart Grinder minimize heat and protect the coffee’s fragile oils. The bean hopper can hold up to 1 pound of beans and features an air-tight lid and locking system. This keeps your beans fresher for longer. You can even remove the hopper from the base and store your beans at an appropriate temperature.

The only issues with this grinder is that it can become jammed if you use oily beans. Not many users complain about this coffee grinder, and the ones that do often complain about the machine becoming clogged. In most cases, these users were trying to grind oily beans despite the warnings provided by the manufacturer. All in all, it’s a great product for your kitchen.

2. Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

The Baratza Encore is a conical burr grinder with 40 different grind settings from French Press to Espresso and everything in between. The Encore’s grind range is from 250 to 1200 microns.

When using this grinder, we found that minimal grinds were leftover, which tends to be a problem with many other models. We also loved that this model uses conical burrs that minimize heat and preserve the coffee’s essential oils. Because the motor turns slowly and remains cool, longer grind cycles can be performed without sacrificing the quality of the coffee.

When it came time to clean the grinder, it was easy to remove the burrs. No special tools were required, which made cleaning a breeze.

The only issue with this grinder is that it is not compatible with dark, oily beans. This tends to be a problem with most burr grinders. The oil from these beans clogs the machines.

3. Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinders

Capresso 560.01 Infinity Burr Grinder

The Capresso Infinity conical burr grinder boasts 100-watts and 16 grind settings. Capresso markets this grinder as commercial-grade, and we’d have to say that it comes pretty close. The conical burrs produce a consistent grind. It’s a slower grinding process, but it preserves the most flavor.

We tested all 16 settings of this grinder, and were pleasantly surprised with the results. This machine can grind coarsely for French press, or powdery fine for Turkish-style coffee. It’s a quiet grinder too, which means you won’t wake the neighbors when making your morning pot of coffee.

The upper conical bur can be removed for easy cleaning, and Capresso also includes a cleaning brush for added convenience. There is a built-in timer that can be set between 5 seconds and a minute. With this feature, you can simply start up your grinder and continue making breakfast.

The two biggest issues with this grinder are that the container sometimes moves out of place during the grinder process, and the leftover grinds in the burrs are difficult to clean.

Conclusion

If you like french press coffee, the Breville Smart Grinder is your top choice. However, the Baratza Encore and Capresso Infinity deliver similar results at affordable prices.
